A trade Mission to
Jiangmen of
nine, led by Dr. John Jang,
went to Jiangmen to reach
for business opportunities.
The members included representatives
of Riverside Community
College and Center for
International Trade Development.
APRIL
2-13, 2002
Blue Star
Regiment Delegation
from John W. North High
School in Riverside spent
five educational and
exciting days in Jiangmen.
The group
included 82 students
and 11 adults and was led
by
Dr. John Jang, Mr. Dale
Kinnear and the Riverside
Unified School District
Superintendent, Dr. Susan
Rainey. The Blue Star
Regiment Band performed
in Taishan
City and Jiangmen City.
Students stayed with
host families and attended
classes.
The group also traveled
to Beijing and Hong Kong. APRIL
16-22, 2002
A 12-member
Education Delegation
from Jiangmen came to Riverside.
Led by Deputy Director
of Education Bureau of
Jiangmen City Mr. Lu
Xue
Feng, the group joined
the Riverside annual
Orange Blossom Festival,
visited
Riverside Community College,
University of California
Riverside, and Riverside
Unified School District.
The Inland Chinese Association
gave a beautiful farewell
party for the group. MAY

A 16-member
Medical Delegation from
Riverside County Medical
Association spent five
days in Jiangmen hosted
by Jiangmen Central Hospital.
The group was welcomed
by Dr. Huang Hong Biao,
President and Dr. Zhong
Kaiyun, Director and
Party Secretary. While
there,
the RCMA delegation provided
numerous formal and informal
medical education programs
to the physicians and
nurses from Jiangmen Central
Hospital,
including presentation
on AIDS and Advances
in Neurosurgery. In additional
to visiting Jiangmen
Central
Hospital, the RCMA delegation
also visited a traditional
Chinese hospital observing
acupuncture and other
holistic medicine techniques
as
well as the viper unit
for snakebites. The delegation
was led by Dr. John Osborne,
M. D., RCMA President
and Dr. Steve Larson, M.
D.,
Delegation Chair. The
group also traveled to
Beijing
and Shanghai. December

Dr. John and Holly
Jang and Marylin
and Lewis Jacobsen were
honored guests at the
90th
Anniversary Celebration
of the founding of Jiangmen
Central Hospital. They
were recognized for their
work in establishing
the Friendship Cities relationship. February
13, 2003
Two young pediatricians
from
China are spending three
months in the Inland Empire
as guests of Riverside
County Medical Association.
They are Dr. Ma Shaofeng,
a pediatric surgeon, and
Dr. Guo Qing-Yun, a neonatal
and neurology specialist,
at Jiangmen Central Hospital.
They have extensive medical
appointments and “shadowing” opportunities
at area hospitals and doctors’ offices. BRIEF
DESCRIPTION OF JIANGMEN
Jiangmen (Rivergate)
is on the West River,
about
a two-hour ride by ferry
from Hong Kong. The city-proper
has about 350,000 population,
and the Jiangmen region
(which includes five
counties under the city)
is about
4 million population.
The area has extensive
industry
of many kinds: glass,
exercise equipment, thread
and fabric,
batteries, photo processing,
washing machines and
air conditioners, and
many
other products both for
sale within China and
for export. Developing
a network
of highways is a major
project. Citrus and other
agriculture are important
parts of the economy.
The gross domestic product
of the area has increased
more than 20 percent
in
each of the last 10 years.
Jiangmen is recognized
as one of the key municipalities
in the Pearl River (Canton)
Delta in Guangdong Province.
Approximately 45 percent
of the Chinese American
population in Southern
California trace their
family histories to Jiangmen. ADDITIONAL

The Riverside-Jiangmen
Friendship Committee
is part of the International
Relations Council. The
City of Riverside also
has sister-city ties
to
Sendai, Japan; Cuautla
and Ensenada, Mexico;
Kangnam-gu, Republic
of Korea, and
Hyderabad, India. Ties
are being explored in
South Africa. Riverside
International
Relations Council is
the umbrella organization
assisting
all the sister-city affiliations.For
